If you want to improve your golf game, you can take lessons, watch videos online, or utilize one of the training aids available on the market. If you’re looking to simply focus on your golf swing, then purchasing a Golf training aid for swing plane may be a great investment. Right off the bat, we can tell you that we recommend the SKLZ Gold Flex Swing Trainer Warm-Up Stick.
Swing Plane: What is it?
The swing plane is the angle of your golf club’s movement from your backswing to your downswing. If your swing is “on plane,” then the angle should remain the same up to the second that you make contact with the ball.
This aspect of the game is influenced by a couple of factors, such as body type, posture, and height. It also differs on the club and the angle of the ball on the ground.
In order to achieve a solid swing plane, the butt of your club needs to be between 2 and 3 feet behind the ball. It should be pointing towards your belly on the upswing and then away from it on the downswing.
How Do I Improve my Golf Swing Plane?
If you’re getting frustrated from lack of results and a high score, here are some observations to make about your swing, as well as simple exercises to improve it.
One of the issues that can cause you to become “off plane” is hand positioning. According to Golf Digest, if your hands are gripping too high on the club, then your downswing will go one of two ways.
First, your swing will go straight down and send the ball flying left. In the second scenario, your hands will try to adjust during your downswing. This will lead to a disruption of your time and affect your distance.
One training exercise is to practice with Alignment rods and a noodle. If you have a correct swing plane, your hands should move directly under the noodle during your downswing. If either your downswing or upswing is compromised in any way, you’ll hit the noodle.
Make sure that you do stance drills. You need to ensure that your posture is correct so that you are properly aligned. Make sure that you have a solid balance and keep your elbow parallel to the ball. Practice aligning your abdomen with the ball and shifting your body over the curve of your dominant foot.
This next tip might seem irrelevant but reducing stress and removing tension. A good tip to keep in mind is to breathe as you swing. This will help relax your whole body and improve your golf swing.
Grip is another aspect that needs to be tackled. You need to make sure that you exert enough strength to keep the club in your hands, but not too hard that it impairs your swing. Most people recommend that, out of 10, aim to grip at a 3 or 4.
Finally, observe how you transfer your weight during your swing. Make sure that you’re shifting from right to left on your downswing. If you’re right-handed, make sure that your left elbow is pointed halfway towards the ball on your downswing. This means you’re on plane.
